Below I am going to explain exactly why dead lifts will change you as an athlete forever!
If you are looking to:
Then you need to be doing dead-lifts. There are a few different ways to do them. In the video below I show you one of the variations I use with Chris James (CJ). The purpose behind doing heavy dead-lifts like this is to increase your testosterone levels (the legal way) :-).
When you are lifting close to your max effort in any given exercise, your body will spit out extra hormones due to the stress you are putting it under. Having extra growth hormones and higher testosterone levels will help you tremendously when you’re looking to pack on some muscle/strength.
Often times young lifters will do the right exercises but just don’t know how many sets, reps, or how long their intervals should be. This dead lifting routine is one of my favorite styles of doing it.
Here’s how it works.
So basically you are doing 4 sets of 2 with 30 seconds rest in between each set. This will give you the biggest testosterone spike making your dead-lift go up, as well as all your other lifts.
Having a strong dead-lift is crucial to becoming a better jumper and overall more athletic. When you dead-lift you are actually using over 600 muscles in your body!
Be sure that dead-lifts are one of the staples in your current workout. If they are not…you are missing out on some serious gains.
When you think of testing your vertical jump, what do you do?
Your feet are planted…you push as much force into the ground…and then you explode into the air as high as you can.
Now think of a dead lift using a hex bar (like the one CJ is using in this Dead Lift Video)…Your feet are planted, and you drive force into the ground in order to lift the weight as high as you can.
Pretty similar, right? So don’t you think you should be focusing on this exercise if that’s your ultimate goal…to jump higher?

Now think of running faster. Each stride in your sprint, what are you doing? You are driving as much force (off one leg) into the ground to get the further stride possible without being uncomfortable.
What exercise helps you drive force into the ground? You guessed it! The Dead Lift.
I’m telling you right now, this is one of my favorite exercises for a reason. I would never tell an athlete to do a workout that didn’t have dead lifts included.
Quick story: I actually met an athlete (he was about 19 years old at the time). He told me that his bench had plateaued and that he didn’t notice any of his lifts going up. I asked him to tell me what he was doing. His response:
To be honest, those are some solid exercises. But my immediate response was, you need to add in dead lifts at least once a week. Then I said, I’ll tell you what…why don’t you ONLY dead lift this week and watch what happens to your bench press next week.
So he listened…
He dead lifted once on monday and once on thursday, giving his body a rest for the remainder of the week. He retested his bench…and surprise surprise, it went up 15 lbs from 250 to 265 lbs.
This is NOT a joke. This is one serious exercise that should be the back bone of your current workout.
So what’s the moral of this blog post?
To do DEAD-LIFTS!
Haha…not better looking but Hey, I wouldn’t doubt it. They are my favorite for a reason!
